Editorial Reviews

Journal of Family Practice
Praise for the previous edition: Goroll does it again. The third edition of Primary Care Medicine gets two thumbs up: one for readability and the second for practicality....This is the gold standard for primary care texts.
Praise for the previous edition: ...beautifully organized and tightly written...residents and practitioners who want a succinct overview of the problems encountered in adult primary care will find this an invaluable resource...Primary Care Medicine is an impressive achievement and a useful tool for clinicians who practice primary care in today's environment.
Sholeh Vaziri
This is an updated reference book that provides an overview of primary care medicine. The purpose is to serve as a source of practical information for use in clinical decision-making in the ambulatory setting. Although it is difficult to exhaustively cover such a topic, this book meets the goal of giving the reader concise, up-to-date guidelines in the treatment of adult patients. Given the recent surge of interest in primary care, this book is a much needed resource. Although there are other books that address this topic, the organization of information in this text makes it useful as a day-to-day reference, both during and after hours. The book is targeted to practitioners, but health care providers at many levels will find it useful. The authors represent their field well, and contributors provide information in specialty areas. The problem-oriented focus emphasizes commonly encountered patient complaints. In addition to addressing diagnostic and treatment issues, the editors also discuss topics such as cost-effective care, estimating risks and benefits, and when to refer patients to a specialist. Although the book does not contain a large number of illustrations, there are some charts and tables that help to outline differential diagnoses and treatment plans. The references are up-to-date and include comments summarizing the content of each reference. This feature will save the reader time in searching for additional information. This book is useful for the health care professional in primary care medicine. As an office text, the practitioner will find it a helpful tool in the daily management of adult outpatients.
New edition of a text that emphasizes the key clinical data essential to decision-making and critical use of tests in primary care medicine. Goroll and Mulley (both of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School) present 16 chapters by a range of medical experts that discuss the principles of primary care; systemic, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, hematological and oncologic, endocrinological, gynecological, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, neurologic, dermatologic, opthalmic, psychiatric, and ear, nose and throat problems; and allied fields. Each chapter ends with practical recommendations that incorporate the best available evidence, expert consensus guidelines, clinical judgment, and everyday common sense. Annotation c. Description: Each of the chapters in this book based upon the frequent presentations of common outpatient problems has been rewritten to incorporate more recent evidence and references, allowing better decision-making in screening, diagnosis, and treatment. This is an update of a 2006 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to keep primary care practitioners current in medicine, particularly with those changes that are truly based on the current literature, and to dispel some unsubstantiated claims made in direct-to-consumer advertising. The editors and contributors present a very worthwhile book, accomplishing the goal.
Audience: The stated audience is primary care practitioners, but that significantly underestimates the audience. This is an excellent reference for specialists who need to maintain an understanding of other specialties. The editors and contributors are acknowledged leaders in the medical community.
Features: The chapters are arranged by presenting problems, e.g. headache, tremor, anemia, etc. Each chapter presents a short explanation of the pertinent pathophysiology, differential diagnoses, the important parts of the workup including physical findings and laboratory data, treatment, and considerations of when referral or admission for inpatient care is indicated. The only shortcoming of the book is the relative lack of graphics, particularly in the dermatology section. There are tables and figures that are easy to understand and a very helpful bibliography.
Assessment: There are numerous books covering primary care medicine and this is a very well laid-out one, but it falls short on graphics. It is worthwhile for those who learn well with text, but is limited a fast reference guide.
