Description: In this update of the 2009 first edition, the authors strive to build a strong bridge between psychiatry and primary care. An online version also is available, which includes educational videos and multiple-choice questions at the end of the chapters.
Purpose: The authors identify "primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and PAs" who regularly treat patients with psychiatric issues. Because the majority of psychiatric treatment occurs in primary care settings, this book is a great tool for educating primary care providers in proper diagnostic and treatment approaches. In our world, in which print books are replaced by screens, the online format is very convenient for getting needed information quickly.
Audience: As a psychiatrist, I felt that the information is appropriately presented for primary care providers who have a foundation of psychiatric knowledge from their training but need to bolster their psychiatric knowledge in several areas. The book achieves that balance of being technical without sacrificing practicality.
Features: The first of the book's four sections reviews how to properly engage with psychiatric patients in the primary care setting. Section 2 reviews common psychiatric mood and psychotic disorders. Section 3 covers different therapeutic techniques such as motivational interviewing and CBT. Section 4 reviews special clinical situations and populations including insomnia, somatic symptoms, geriatric patients, and child and adolescent patients. Each chapter includes helpful graphics, case studies, and illustrations to facilitate comprehension. Resources and references conclude each chapter. The print book does not have as many practice questions as the online version.
Assessment: This second edition is necessary given the continued changes in medicine and psychiatry. This is a welcome update, as there is a shortage of psychiatrists and primary care providers, leaving many psychiatric patients without adequate care. This book is both comprehensive and very practical and should be regularly used by busy primary care providers who frequently encounter patients who need the presented psychiatric treatment options. This book would be most helpful in family practice residency programs.
