Children's LiteratureThis counting book goes from one to twelve and then multiples of ten up to one hundred. Each page has a beautiful illustration that complements the highlighted number and a poem that ties together the illustration and the number. On the margin of each page are several paragraphs which further explain how the poem and the illustration relate to New Hampshire. Each spread captures a different aspect of New Hampshire from Shakers to trout to snowboarding. The first twelve illustrations seem to loosely follow a seasonal pattern. The reading level of the poems and the text in the margin is significantly above the ability one would find in a child interested in a counting book. However, in a classroom setting this mismatch might by overcome. This book is educational, attractive, and well-written. But due to its specialized nature, the audience is probably limited to New Hampshire residents and tourists. 2004, Thomson Gale, Ages 4 to 7.
