Editorial Reviews

Journal of the American Medical Association
If you own earlier editions of this text, you've probably been practicing for a while. It may not be a priority to update your basic textbook collection, but I encourage you to consider upgrading, especially if you are in a position to loan this book to a student. Primary Pediatric Care is a complete and comprehensive text, which continues to improve with every edition. Its continuing focus on primary pediatrics and inclusion of developmental and psychosocial subjects, unlike other disease-oriented pediatric texts, makes it valuable for both the novice and experienced practitioner.
Gary L. Freed
This book is a new edition of Dr. Hoekelman's textcovering the provision of primary care pediatrics. The purpose of thebook is to provide the much of the ""determinants and reflections ofhealth and disease"" for the primary provider of healthcare to thepediatric patient. This is an important objective as primary carepractitioners must become competent in an increasingly wide array ofclinical areas. I think the authors cover a great deal of material inthe text but many important topics still require the reader to seekother sources of information. The book is intended for the primarycare physician engaged in the care of children. Pediatricians, familyphysicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants may find thisbook helpful. The authors are leaders in the field of primary carepediatrics. There are adequate numbers of illustrations in the text. Many of the references are older than necessary and could be updated. The appendixes of the book are very useful. Normal laboratory valuesand the dosages of commonly used medications are provided. Additionally, there is an appendix dedicated to the performance ofspecial pediatric procedures. This section in particular iswell-illustrated and likely to be very helpful. The book provides abroad view of primary care pediatrics.
