Description: This book is a new edition of Dr. Hoekelman's text covering the provision of primary care pediatrics.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide the much of the "determinants and reflections of health and disease" for the primary provider of healthcare to the pediatric patient. This is an important objective as primary care practitioners must become competent in an increasingly wide array of clinical areas. I think the authors cover a great deal of material in the text but many important topics still require the reader to seek other sources of information.
Audience: The book is intended for the primary care physician engaged in the care of children. Pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants may find this book helpful. The authors are leaders in the field of primary care pediatrics.
Features: There are adequate numbers of illustrations in the text. Many of the references are older than necessary and could be updated. The appendixes of the book are very useful. Normal laboratory values and the dosages of commonly used medications are provided. Additionally, there is an appendix dedicated to the performance of special pediatric procedures. This section in particular is well-illustrated and likely to be very helpful.
Assessment: The book provides a broad view of primary care pediatrics.
