Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Just about everyone working with children will find this an excellent choice, and it is essential for all school and public libraries. It is big, meaty, and easy to use, and the books selected are the best, most current, and can be found in most libraries. Primaryplots is essentially a book talk guide for use with children in grades K-3. It includes brief summaries of the books featured, information on the authors, materials and activities for book talks, lists of similar and/or related titles, audiovisuals and thematic materials. There is a good index of authors, titles, subjects, and illustrators and eight categories of books to pick from, including, ``Finding a Picture Book,'' ``Focusing on Folktales,'' ``Developing a Positive Self-Image.'' Similar in some ways to Margaret Read MacDonald's well-done Booksharing: 101 Programs to Use With Preschoolers (Library Professional Pubns., 1988) but more comprehensive and broader in scope.-- Annette V. Janes, Hamilton P.L., Mass.

This follows a 1989 edition, "Primaryplots", by the same author, an elementary school librarian. Like its predecessor, it was developed as a selection aid for programs for children ages four to eight. It contains 150 titles, including alphabet, counting, poetry, and concept books, and provides information for booktalks, story programs, classroom activities, and reading guidance. Books profiled were published between 1988 and 1992 and selected for inclusion from standard reviewing and evaluation sources, including "Booklist"'s "Editor's Choice," "School Library Journal"'s "Best Books," the Association of Library Service to Children's "Notable Books," and the International Reading Association's "Children's Choices." Subject area lists and the 16th edition and supplements of "Children's Catalog" were also consulted. Responding to the whole-language philosophy of providing a literature-based curriculum, this edition offers a greater emphasis on integrating books into the classroom experience Books are arranged in the same eight categories as in the earlier edition, including "Developing a Positive Self-Image, Learning about the World around You, Analyzing Illustrations," and "Focusing on Folktales." Each entry has a concise plot summary, thematic notes, bibliographic detail, audiovisual adaptations, author/illustrator information, related titles, and suggested activities. Cumulative indexes access authors, illustrators, titles, and subjects from this volume and its predecessor Providing information for booktalking and curriculum development, this title is a good aid in the selection and use of high-quality literature for both public and elementary school libraries. Classroom teachers and children's librarians will benefit from this guide.
