Description: With this fifth edition of the Primer of Epidemiology, the author includes several new examples to illustrate new epidemiologic concepts and adds an important new chapter on molecular and genetic epidemiology.
Purpose: According to its preface, the purpose is "to create a simple, brief, clear and inexpensive exposition of epidemiology." The book succeeds admirably in doing so.
Audience: Medical students, as well as students of public health, nursing, and other health professions will find this book highly valuable. The author is a well-known, highly respected physician and epidemiologist.
Features: The primer consists of 18 chapters. It includes a quick review chapter, summarizing the book, and a chapter discussing answers to problems posed in each of the other chapters.
Assessment: This is an easy to read and widely used basic epidemiology textbook. It explains epidemiologic and related statistical concepts in clear and simple terms. A moderately priced book, it is a good value for students and professionals.
