Overview

The legend of trumpeter and singer Chet Baker lives on. How much of it is due, in the popular imagination, with the glamour of his youthful good looks and subsequent dissolute lifestyle rather than the music he made during his career is hard to say, but the title of the three-CD collection Prince of Cool may tell you something. Which is too bad, because Baker’s lyrical and swinging style continues to endure as affecting jazz. This strong collection concentrates on Baker’s early musical life, spanning his popular recordings from the '50s and '60s. The first CD centers on Baker’s vocals; the second, his trumpet performances; the third, his important collaborations with luminaries including Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, and Stan Getz. Thus, Baker’s musical range gets a fair hearing. While he was an exemplar of the West Coast “Cool School,” Baker was never limited to that genre. He may have had one of the most emotional sounds going, as both a horn player and a singer, but Baker could also turn in romping vocals and powerfully assertive trumpet performances that retain palpable force decades later. Prince of Cool tries to grab you with its seductive title, but the music it presents will alert you to the true message of this sadly misdirected jazzman.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Prince of Cool collects most of the sides the young trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker recorded for the fledgling Pacific Jazz label from 1952 to 1957. These are the recordings that defined Baker's career and largely created the aura of Baker the jazz idol. On these three discs -- separated into "Chet Sings," "Chet Plays," and "Chet & Friends" -- we find the youthful, good-looking, and technically proficient Baker before heroin addiction, dentures, and slapdash recordings forever linked the notion of tragedy to his legend. Included are such classic cuts as Baker's vocal version of "My Funny Valentine" off Chet Baker Sings, "Happy Little Sunbeam" from Chet Baker Quartet Featuring Russ Freeman, and Baker's storied original instrumental version of "My Funny Valentine" off Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker: Timeless. While there is little to quibble with here, all of these tracks are available elsewhere, leaving longtime fans with little incentive to pick up this anthology. However, for neophyte collectors looking to net most of Baker's early catalog, Prince of Cool is a sweet deal.
