Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6Just before midnight on Fred's 11th birthday, the Prince of Tarn appears in the boy's bedroom. Who, you might ask, is the Prince of Tarn? He is a book character from an imaginary kingdom created by Fred's mother some years earlier, before she died. Haughty, arrogant, and spoiled rotten, the Prince is indignant at being sent to this strange world by the wizard, Ezran. Hisroy (short for His Royal Highness) is too self-absorbed to realize that it is for his own protection and that Tarn is being destroyed, or to be more accurate, is returning to its natural, densely forested state. Comical adventures abound as a make-believe character learns that cars aren't monsters that eat people and that cold pizza is excellent for breakfast. In the end, Fred and his friend Rebecca travel to Tarn to help save it, though in the process, Fred gives up the precious hand-lettered, leather-bound book his mother wrote for him. At times, The Prince of Tarn sparkles with commentary about the nature of stories and the imagination. For example, the father recalls that while Fred's mother was writing, "mist used to leak from under the doorway. And the smell of cooking. And the noise of sword fights." At other times, phrases seem stilted, and even trite, especially in regard to the expression of feelings, "everything felt all weird." An engaging premise that doesn't entirely satisfy.Robin L.
