Overview

THE PRINCESS AND CURDIE IS A GREAT YOUNG PERSON'S FANTASY NOVEL! A SEQUEL TO THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN! YET A STAND ALONE BOOK!
While the former dealt primarily with the adventures of Princess Irene this one focuses almost exclusively on the young miner Curdie who struggles to aid the King and Princess Irene against the treachery of those who wish to overthrow their Kingdom. Once Curdie starts his quest the story really gets moving along and you will be hooked on it nearly as thoroughly as you were hooked on the Princess and the Goblin. It is a wonderful fairy tale of adventure and a fair bit of action.
There is much thought in the story and like the Princess and the Goblin the author illustrates virtues, vices and morality quite well. The characters are interesting as in the first story and again the Great-Great Grandmother of Irene wields a subtle magic manipulating events but only by aiding the primary characters in aiding themselves and others. It is only in the last desperate battle at the end of the story that this cunning Enchantress takes an active hand in the action.

MacDonald loves songs and poetry and often puts them to use in the story. However you may find them to be distracting and not hold your interest. You will enjoy the story and highly recommend it to your friends especially if you enjoyed the Princess and the Goblin.
Here is a readers recommendation: "This book is simply amazing. It was read to me when I was a child, and I read it still, and every time I open it I find something that I had not seen before. It's descriptions are entrancing, its layers simultaneously simply and complex, and its beauty beyond my expression. It will fire the imagination of any open mind."

    Terrific story, terrible format!

The story is wonderful: full of delight, thoughtfulness, depth, engaging story, character development and emotional touchstones.

HOWEVER--- this particular edition is terrible! The formatting is atrocious! There are hardly any margins, which makes it very hard to hold open to read, not to mention hard on the eyes. The font isn't the easiest to read, either. The illustrations are very nice, which is one reason I bought this edition, but there is no mention anywhere in the book of the illustrator's name. It feels like a cheaply made book.

I wish I had bought a different edition. I would send this one back, but I have already opened it too far (I had a book club meeting that I had to read it for).

    a charming fairytale continued

MacDonald is a master storyteller, though his books are sometimes hard to find! Make sure you read the book before it, 'The Princess and the Goblin', too!
