Their glittering adventure winds through Ladybird Bend, Dragonfly Pool, Three Wishes Market, Topsy-Turvy Fairy-Go-Round, Slippery Hill, and Piggeldy Moss—all depicted in lushly detailed illustrations. With lyrical text, treasure-filled art, and “Can you find” objects on every page, Anna Pignataro creates an alluring look-and-find adventure for little bunnies everywhere. Features glitter on the cover and final spread, a treasure-hunt list of objects affixed with a sticker, and an envelope with a tiny invitation—from the queen!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
It's surprisingly difficult to produce a book that offers bunnies in pink dresses as well as a high degree of visual sophistication, but Pignataro (Mama, How Long Will You Love Me?) succeeds. Her delicately penned and tinted spreads are crowded with tiny cupcakes, horse-drawn teacup carriages, walnut-shell boats and libraries built into trees. Princess and Fairy receive an invitation to the queen's birthday party (the minuscule note can be removed from an equally tiny envelope), and they put together a list of treasures to bring. Full-page spreads trace their paths through Three Wishes Market, Gold Penny Lane and other whimsical locales as they find each of the items required. (A small “Can you find?” emblem in the center of each spread directs readers to search for the objects themselves.) The bunnies arrive at the palace spattered with mud, the closest the sunny story comes to a dark moment, but they are immediately put at ease. “ '...never mind your dirty dresses./ Your smiles,' says the Fairy Queen,/ 'Are the prettiest things I've ever seen!' ” Sure to sit on the top of the favorites pile. Ages 4–7. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Michele C. Hughes
Princess and Fairy are the best of friends: "All they did/they did together." When they receive the Fairy Queen's invitation to a Royal Ball, this sends them into a tizzy of preparation. They make a somewhat random list of items to shop for, including a four-leaf clover, the buckle of a leprechaun, and a jar of honey. Why do they need these items? The reader is not certain, even at the end when they present them to the Queen as "beautiful things to share." (Surely she was not really expecting them to bring such precious gifts.) Each stanza of two rhyming couplets with uneven meter describes their quest for these fifteen items, with no time for a Fairy Flow spa treatment and countless reminders of how there is no time to spare—yet they stop at Fairyland Fairground for a ride. Double-page spread illustrations show an astonishing amount of detail, so much so that the tiny bunnies are virtually indistinguishable from the other bunnies flitting around in the town. The items the reader must find on each page are lost in the center fold between the stanzas at the bottom—it is entirely possible to miss this device and wonder why the bunnies refer to the five items they have found or the eight they have left. In the end, the harried little bunnies arrive at the ball, grubby and messy, but with a basket of gifts for the Queen, who rewards them by giving them each a wish. Of course they use the wishes to transform themselves and "sparkle like the brightest stars." Then the story abruptly ends, leaving the reader to wonder if the preparation for the ball is supposed to be more exciting than the actual event. Reviewer: Michele C. Hughes
Kirkus Reviews
Saccharine, sparkly and overwhelmingly pink, this selection seems calculatedly aimed at some of the retail industry's hottest market: little girls. Princess and fairy are the best of friends. When they receive an invitation to the queen's birthday gala, the bunnies search Fairyland for a list of party items, which include sapphire shoes, a blue silk purse and a diamond ring, among other necessities. Surviving slight obstacles along the way, the rabbits are dirty by day's end, though the queen thanks them for their efforts. The book is strongest visually as the bunnies shop; readers can search for hidden objects within each intricately detailed double-page spread. Pignataro's ink, pencil, watercolor and collage art utilizes patterned borders to contain each busy scene. While successful as a search-and-find, the story suffers as slight rhymes convey a forced enthusiasm. "Midnight treats and secret wishes, / Toadstool dancing and fairy swishes, / Hide-and-seek at Ladybird Bend, / Best of friends to the fairy end!" All sweet and no spice provides a sugary overdose in this consumerist fantasy. (Picture book. 3-6)
