Overview

When a flawlessly dressed woman steps out of an iridescent bubble and wants to know, like, now if you'd like to become a substitute princess, do you: a) run b) faint c) say yes! For Desi Bascomb, who's been longing for a bit of glamour in her Idaho life, the choice is a definite c)--that is, once she can stop pinching herself. As her new agent, Meredith, explains, Desi has a rare magical ability: when she applies the ancient Egyptian formula "Royal Rouge," she can transform temporarily into the exact look-alike of any princess who needs her subbing services. Dream come true, right? Well, Desi soon discovers that subbing involves a lot more than wearing a tiara and waving at cameras. Like, what do you do when a bullying older sister puts you on a heinous crash diet? Or when the tribal villagers gather to watch you perform a ceremonial dance you don't know? Or when a princess's conflicted sweetheart shows up to break things off--and you're sure she would want you to change his mind? In this hilarious, winning debut, one girl's dream of glamour transforms into something bigger: the desire to make a positive impact. And an impact Desi makes, one royal fiasco at a time.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
When 14-year-old Desi answers a classified ad that reads “Princess for Hire,” she can't believe her luck: Desi finds out she has MP (Magic Potential). This means she has what it takes to become a princess surrogate, which requires the ability to physically transform into the image of any princess across the globe. Desi doesn't have to think twice (she lives in Sproutville, Idaho, and her current job involves wearing a groundhog costume). She signs on with Meredith, a no-nonsense “[p]rincess agent extraordinaire,” who gives Desi a crash course in standing in for vacationing royals. Filled with slapstick humor that some might find grating, and populated by an over-the-top cast of characters, Desi's story consists of one mishap after another, as she tries to navigate the love lives and friendships of the royals. First in a planned series, Leavitt's debut novel has an entertaining premise that would be right at home as a TV movie for tweens. Though the stakes never feel high and Desi's ultimate triumph is a foregone conclusion, Desi shows that she's a heroine with heart. Ages 11–up. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
It is the summer before eighth grade and Desi Bascomb is miserable. Her former best friend, Celeste, has turned Desi into an outcast. To add insult to injury, Desi is spending her summer working as a mascot at a pet store. When her manager claims to have a special wishing tank in the break room, Desi wishes to make an impact on peoples' lives and, as an afterthought, for a more glamorous job. Later that day, she inadvertently answers an ad seeking substitute princesses. Meredith, a princess agent, materializes in Desi's bathroom, hiring Desi to stand in for vacationing princesses. A magic compact allows her to change her voice, appearance, and language, but Desi must change her behavior and assimilate all on her own. Her new job involves world travel and lots of training. Although Desi is supposed to act like the princesses for whom she is filling in, she cannot help but meddle a bit to try to improve their lives. Through her new job, Desi gains confidence and perspective, all while having amazing adventures. This story will easily appeal to fans of Meg Cabot's "The Princess Dairies" as well as anyone who likes their princess stories with a bit of excitement. Desi is kind, adventurous, and easily relatable. The end leaves readers wondering what lies ahead for Desi, so it seems likely that this book is the first in a series. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
School Library Journal
Gr 6–8—Readers still lamenting the conclusion of Meg Cabot's "Princess Diaries" (HarperCollins) will eagerly embrace this first volume in the adventures of Desi Bascomb. The 15-year-old is stuck in Sproutsville, ID, where she is tormented by her ex-best friend, Celeste, and is working a miserable job at Pets Charming, where she is forced to dress up as a groundhog. Then she spies an ad for a princess sub and meets agent Meredith, who informs Desi that she has a rare magical gift that will allow her to apply royal rouge and stand in for any princess in need of a break. Desi is sent on three missions for three very different young women, and though she is told not to interfere, at last she sees her chance to make an impact. Though the plot is predictable and concepts such as royal rouge and getting from job to job in a bubble are silly and contrived, overall the novel is frothy fun. Desi is constantly comparing herself to seemingly perfect Celeste, and it is only through her new job that she begins to discover her own worth. This is a fast-paced and humorous read with a dash of romance. It's sure to leave readers longing for the next installment.—Shari Fesko, Southfield Public Library, MI

    more from this reviewer

review from One Book At A Time http://onebooktime.blogspot.com

I contacted the author (who directed me to her publisher) about this book. It just sounded so cute and since it was sort of set in Idaho, I wanted it! Thankfully the publisher consented to my wish! From the pink glittery cover to the princess story inside, I felt like the this story had Disney written all over. But, not in the cheesy straight to DVD sort of way. I was reminded of Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries (OK the movie version since I haven't read the books). Desi is a great character for pre-teens. She's struggling with who she is, but knows she wants to make a difference. I think she does a fantastic job helping princess' who feel the exact same way she does. And, in doing so she gains confidence in her own life. The story had a little bit of fairy tale magic that makes it all cute and bubbly (pun intended)! Overall perfect for pre-teens, or even younger girls. I think even some adult might like this as well (I know I did)!

    My Favorite Book!

Even the cover drew me in. Come on what 12 year old wouldn't luh-v that. Desi was somewhat not how I pictured her at first she quickly became one of my favorite book characters. If only Facade was a real place. I'd love to be a surrogate because I luh-v acting and royalty.
