Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Erickson
In this rhyming-romp, the principal has lost his beloved teddy bear and will not go to bed. This is familiar territory, although seeing a grown-up fuss like a child is enjoyable. Fred, along with wife and child, look everywhere for the teddy, and even the dog joins in. Eventually the bear is found and all is well until the next morning. While this is an interesting concept, there are several sticky points in the execution. The pacing of the rhyme will make this a difficult read aloud and the presence of an obvious typo will trip up readers as well. The use of onomatopoeia comes toward the end of the book and feels forced. Also, seeing as how the entire book takes place in the home, with the exception of a wordless spread at the beginning, it makes little difference that the main character is a principal. The main character could have been any adult who holds a position of respect, like teacher or doctor. This is an additional purchase for teddy-bear loving principals only. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson

K-Gr 1—Tired Fred won't go to bed without his teddy bear, and that's a problem for his whole family. His wife and son join him in searching for the missing companion, but it is not until the man slips on a dirty sock the dog is chewing that Bear appears. The canine is rewarded with a big steak, Principal Fred goes to bed, and peace returns to the house. The principal acts like a two-year-old and has a tantrum because he can't find his teddy, but the setup is not really believable. The mixed-media illustrations are large and cartoonish, and might be appealing because of the simple lines and liberal use of white space. However, they do not stand out as particularly creative or engaging. This book might introduce discussion of bedtime issues, but the image of a principal as a silly, childish individual may be counterproductive.—Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME
