Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"...overall high quality...I thoroughly recommend to individuals and departments..." (British Journal of Psychiatry, March 2003)

"…a very useful reference resource..." (International Psychogeriatrics, Vol.16, No.3, 2004)

Michael J. Schrift
This is an interesting new comprehensive textbook covering the field of geriatric psychiatry. The book incorporates the contributions of internationally known experts in this field. The purpose is to provide an authoritative text that draws on the knowledge of experts and reflects both new scientific advances and innovations in service development. Also, the authors have attempted to provide a glimpse of geriatric psychiatry in developing countries and the scope of the problems experienced by local practitioners. This is an extremely important textbook, and the authors have been successful in meeting their goals. Although not specifically stated, this book is intended for psychiatrists, geriatric psychiatrists, geriatricians, and investigators who do research on aging and mental illness. Because of its high price ($295), it will be limited to a reference text in medical school and psychiatry department libraries. This encyclopedic textbook is divided into 13 sections incorporating 148 chapters. Topics include historical background, normal aging, diagnosis and assessment, organic disorders, affective disorders, schizophrenic and paranoid disorders, neuroses, personality disorders, psychoactive substance abuse, learning and behavioral disorders, mental illness in different cultures, and practice of psychogeriatric medicine. The book is filled with numerous charts and figures, and the references are voluminous and up-to-date. The index is also quite helpful. This is an excellent, comprehensive, and up-to-date textbook written by a group of outstanding contributors. Because of the exorbitant price, the text will be limited in audience, but it would be useful as a reference text.
