Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is the third edition of a comprehensive textbook on mechanical ventilation and supporting therapies. The second edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: This book presents a detailed review of mechanical ventilation technologies and extracorporeal techniques.
Audience: Critical care practitioners at all levels are an appropriate audience for this work emanating from an international group of experts.
Features: Initial chapters review the physiology and indications for mechanical ventilation. Subsequent chapters describe ventilator modes followed by noninvasive ventilation techniques and extracorporeal life-support for respiratory failure. Applications are presented in specific disease states including ARDS, asthma, and COPD. A series of chapters describes common complications and management issues, including titration of analgesia and neuromuscular blockade, patient-ventilator dyssynchrony, and weaning. Concluding chapters review ethical considerations and adjuncts including surfactant, nitric oxide, and inhaled antibiotics. Presentations are clearly written and include well-done tables and line drawings. Radiographs, retained from older editions, reproduce with adequate quality. Most of the chapters have been retained in this edition and, while some show little change in reference lists, most have content and references that have been updated to within two to three years of publication. The table of contents lists chapters, authorship, and the nature of content. A detailed subject index of 40 pages includes separate citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This remains the definitive book describing a therapy that we identify with the intensive care unit. There are no new chapters apart from a discussion of neurally adjusted ventilatory assist. The material on extracorporeal life-support content has been updated to reflect increasing interest in these techniques. While many chapters from the second edition remain largely intact, references are updated and the quality of the content is outstanding.
