Overview

The Fourth Edition of this landmark work features nine new chapters and has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect contemporary findings. It is the only text that covers every important aspect of radiation oncology—from basic cancer biology, radiation biology, and radiation therapy physics to state-of-the-art treatment regimens for all cancer sites and tumor types and discussions of results.

Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology is designed to provide a better understanding of the natural history of cancer, the physical methods of radiation application, the effects of irradiation on normal tissues, and the most judicious ways in which radiation therapy can be employed in the treatment of cancer patients. This encyclopedic text places greater emphasis on the use of radiation oncology in palliative and supportive care, in addition to therapy.

Included in the new edition: chapters on molecular biology and physiology, technology assessment and cost benefit, combined chemotherapy and irradiation in head and neck cancer, breast: stage Tis, pancreas, leukemias (adult and childhood), retinoblastoma, unusual tumors in childhood, and endovascular brachytherapy. This edition also features expanded coverage of new 3-D techniques and IMRT and a greater emphasis on pediatric concerns.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

James G. Douglas
This much needed and anticipated third edition of the primary reference text for radiation oncologists is edited and written by the recognized pioneers and leaders in the field of radiotherapy. The second edition was published in 1992. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date review of all aspects of radiotherapy, including theoretical principles as well as clinical practice guidelines. It is written primarily for practicing radiation oncologists and radiation oncology residents, although the sections dealing with radiotherapeutic principles are very appropriate for medical physicists, dosimetrists, and radiobiologists. The third edition of this broad-based textbook continues the tradition of excellence established in the preceding editions. Most chapters have undergone substantial revision, and as before, include extensive, up-to-date bibliographies. Clinical guidelines for each tumor site, with emphasis on radiotherapy indications and techniques, are generally excellent. New areas of technological innovation such as stereotactic radiosurgery, high dose rate brachytherapy, and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, are now covered in detail separately. The segment describing palliative therapy for the cancer patient has been expanded and reorganized, and includes an excellent chapter on pain management strategies. Sections detailing molecular biologic principles and potential clinical implications have been expanded. The textbook has been given a ""new look"" which generally is quite reader friendly, although the quality of radiograph reproductions on the new non-glossy paper is not as good as that of the previous edition. Some of the figures and tables are inneed of updating to achieve greater consistency with the revised text. This textbook is the most comprehensive tome available in radiation oncology today. It is well-written, well-referenced, and practical, and will serve as the bedrock of the practicing radiation oncologist's reference library.
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Haleigh Werner, MD (University of Washington Medical Center)
Description: The fourth edition of this book continues its tradition of providing extensive in-depth and up-to-date information spanning all aspects of radiation oncology - from radiobiology, physics, and cancer biology to radiation oncology technology and clinical practice.
Purpose: The expressed purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a definitive, authoritative, and comprehensive review of radiation oncology. This fourth edition meets these objectives extremely well.
Audience: This book is written for radiation oncologists in practice and training, however, it can also be an important resource for medical and surgical oncologists and to all involved in oncology practice.
Features: This book begins with an excellent overview on the history and application of radiation oncology and then proceeds with a thorough discussion of cancer biology and radiation physics. This book also has new comprehensive chapters on three-dimensional planning and intensity modulated radiation therapy treatment planning which is essential given the rapid changes in the evolution of radiation therapy planning. Following the chapters on various radiation techniques, modalities and modifiers are the clinical chapters devoted to each individual anatomic cancer site. Each chapter provides an excellent review of anatomy, epidemiology, pathology, diagnostic work-up, prognostic factors, and treatment with a separate section detailing the results of clinical trials and those pertinent trials in progress. The book is very well illustrated with radiologic images, simulation films, graphs, figures and tables. These illustrations are conveniently placed on the same page as the text describing the data. In addition, numerous references are organized alphabetically at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: In my opinion, this book continues to be single, most authoritative textbook for radiation oncology. The editors and authors have done an outstanding job of implementing many new chapters addressing the changing technology and tumor biology and providing clear, concise information on the wide variety of malignancies encountered in clinical practice. This book is a must for practicing radiation oncologists and radiation oncology residents. It will not disappoint the reader.
