The book describes both existing encapsulation systems and those in the planning stages for disposal facilities ranging from simple dumps to sophisticated mixed waste facilities. It integrates the diverse technologies and scientific disciplines that are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of a durable encapsulation system. Technical approaches that have been developed in the last decade to provide objective quantification of the long-term (up to 1,000 years) performance of these systems are examined.
