Overview

This text from the American Society of Addiction Medicine is valuable for all physicians and mental-health personnel who specialize in addiction medicine and who treat patients with addiction disorders. The chapters blend scientific principles underlying addiction with the practical essentials of clinical addiction medicine. Many of the contributors are affiliated with leading government agencies that study addiction and its science, such as the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The book will appeal to a wide and interdisciplinary range of professionals, especially those with interest or duties relating to addiction-related disorders, and in particular physicians seeking certification status via either the American Board of Addiction Medicine or the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Easton, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book details the state of the science and practice of addiction medicine. After an initial section on basic science, the majority of the book focuses on clinical aspects.
Purpose: This comprehensive reference provides updated information on our understanding of addictive disorders. This fourth edition has been substantially reorganized, revised, and augmented to cover an ever-expanding body of knowledge.
Audience: This excellent overview of the specialty of addiction medicine is meant as a reference for all healthcare professionals directly or indirectly involved in the clinical care of this population.
Features: Each of the book's 14 sections is organized by senior editors who are well known experts in their areas. The first section on basic science is followed by sections reviewing pharmacology (opiates, stimulants, caffeine, nicotine, cannabinoids, hallucinogens and designer drugs, dissociatives, inhalants, and steroids); diagnosis and intervention (including special populations, emergency rooms, geriatrics and laboratory testing); management of withdrawal; psychosocial, behavioral, and pharmacological treatments (for alcohol, opioids, stimulants and nicotine); and self help groups. The book then turns to topics such as medical problems caused by alcohol and drugs and co-occurring psychiatric disorders, addiction and pain, children and adolescents, and ends with ethical, legal, and liability issues in addiction practice.
Assessment: This is a thorough reference in addiction medicine dealing primarily with clinical aspects of these disorders. Each section is comprehensive and provides extensive references if readers want more detailed information.
