Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT, AE-C(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This13th edition continues in the tradition of its predecessors of being arguably one of the best anatomy and physiology textbooks available. It integrates the classic text with online multimedia aids. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: "Helping Teachers and Students Succeed Together" is the foundation of this book. This edition offers a balanced presentation of content, integrating online animations, visualizations, and MP3 downloads to reinforce concepts.
Audience: Written for healthcare students taking two semesters of anatomy and physiology, it is used in many healthcare programs.
Features: The book uses a homeostatic approach. It begins with chemical, cellular, and tissue levels of organization, then progresses into integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems before moving into the various organ systems throughout the body. Each chapter begins with a statement, a brief overview of the chapter, and chapter objectives and contains numerous images, drawings, tables, and figures, plus Clinical Connections that highlight clinical relevance. Chapters end with a disorders section followed by medical terminology, chapter review and resource summary, self-quiz questions, critical thinking questions, and answers to figure questions posed within the chapter.
Assessment: This is an outstanding anatomy and physiology textbook and ranks with other classics such as Hole's Human Anatomy and Physiology, 12th edition, Shier et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2010). Not only is it excellent for healthcare students, it also would be appropriate for high school students and as a reference in libraries.

Great textbook for A and P students

This is an excellent book for anatomy and physiology. The illustrations are great. The topics are explained with simplicity. I especially loved the muscular and skeletal sections. I also recommend: Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi (Vol 1) (Vol 2) This study guide had great review questions for my college exams. It showed me the type of questions to look out for. These three books helped me a lot with getting good grades.

    Informative and Descriptive Textbook

The book is great. It has a lot of information and description, but it is not complicated to understand. It covers anatomy and physiology of the body systems.
