Description: Since the third edition of Principles of Exercise Testing and Interpretation was published in 1999, there have been important advances in the area of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and interpretation. In this fourth edition, the authors continue to provide the most up-to-date information on exercise testing and interpretation, which will allow clinicians to maximize the use of cardiopulmonary test results to identify the underlying pathophysiologies of exercise intolerance.
Purpose: In the authors' words, their goal is to incorporate new conceptual advances in the physiology and pathophysiology of exercise, particularly as related to the practice of medicine. The underlying theme of the book continues to be the recognition that the most important requirement for exercise performance is the transport of oxygen to support the bioenergetic processes in the muscle cells and elimination of carbon dioxide formed as a byproduct of exercise metabolism. The authors have met their stated objectives.
Audience: The authors intend this as a comprehensive, yet practical clinical book for cardiologists, pulmonologists, physiologists, and other physicians. I think the book is appropriately targeted, but it could also be used a supplemental text/reference for graduate courses in exercise testing and interpretation. The authors are recognized as leading authorities in the field of exercise testing and interpretation.
Features: Comprehensive in scope, the book covers a wide range of topics including the physiology of exercise, numerous aspects of clinical exercise testing, normal and abnormal responses to cardiopulmonary testing, a new chapter focusing on blood gas and pH during exercise, updated information on clinical applications of exercise testing as well as a flowchart approach to identifying the pathophysiology underlying exercise intolerance. Each chapter is well referenced and benefits from the vast research experience of the authors. In addition, the book includes 85 case presentations that serve as excellent examples of how useful cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be in diagnosing a wide variety of diseases, their severity, and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. The case presentations may be particularly helpful for educators and/or clinicians who use a problem-based learning approach to teaching clinical exercise testing and interpretation. If it could be viewed as a shortcoming, the book is written in a highly technical manner and, therefore, is not an easy read.
Assessment: This is an essential book for clinicians and/or academicians who work in the area of exercise testing and interpretation. Its strengths are its depth, its practical approach, and the numerous case studies.
