About the Author

Bernard J. Healey, PhD, is a professor of healthcare administration at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Dr. Healey began his career in 1971 as an epidemiologist for the Pennsylvania Department of Health. During his tenure with the government, he earned his master’s in public administration and his doctorate in health education from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in business, public health, and healthcare administration at several colleges since 1974. He has coauthored five books on various healthcare-related topics and has published more than a hundred articles on public health, health policy, leadership, marketing, and healthcare partnerships. Dr. Healey is a member of the American Public Health Association and of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. He is a part-time consultant in epidemiology for the Wilkes-Barre City Health Department and a consultant for numerous public health projects in Pennsylvania.

Description: As the demands of healthcare continue to rise, it is necessary that the knowledge and skills of leaders in the profession rise in response. This book provides insights into what it means to lead the profession and not just manage it. Each chapter starts with learning objectives as well as key words that are defined throughout the text. A summary of the chapter reiterates critical topics of interest followed by discussion questions to guide a deeper dive into the information. References specific to the chapter are listed at the end.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide emerging healthcare leaders with education on topics that will contribute to their success. In addition, current members of healthcare leadership can re-explore important topics that remain at the forefront of their careers in order to keep their knowledge up to date. Due to the continual change that healthcare faces, effective and efficient leaders are necessary, and this book is pivotal. The objectives are easily met and the book appeals to a variety of learning styles.
Audience: The intended audience is both prospective and current workers in healthcare with an interest in leading the profession. The authors are experts, speaking from both their education and knowledge in the field, as well as from their personal experience.
Features: The first half of the book is quite simple, discussing topics that apply to many professions besides healthcare, such as leadership theories and evolution. However, this information is not to be discounted, as a more basic understanding or reintroduction must occur in order to better understand the more complex topics. The second half of the book expands upon the basics by emphasizing that change must become part of the culture within an organization. Leaders are the catalysts, but it is teamwork that is at the forefront, and the best leaders develop the best teams. The most thought-provoking part of the book is the last section of case studies that enables readers to put all of the information to work and allows for more critical thinking and application. While there is a plethora of references to support the information, many of them are out of date.
Assessment: This book is very appealing to both fresh and seasoned leaders in healthcare. It is a great marriage between basic and complex topics and truly provokes readers to consider what type of leader they desire to be.
