Assesses the extent to which recently privatized companies in Britain have been able to focus simultaneously on static and dynamic efficiency through cost reduction and purchasing and supply functional professionalism, and on transformational efficiency through supply alignment and procurement competence. Finds that while a majority of the companies analyzed<-->as well as some of the public sector organizations studied as a control group<-->have improved the professionalism of their internal and external purchasing and supply functions, few demonstrated any real understanding of the supply alignment and procurement competence.
