A product from Sports Illustrated, this book provides six-page spreads on seven baseball players: Albert Pujols, Roy Halladay, Evan Longoria, Josh Hamilton, Joey Votto, Joe Mauer, and Justin Verlander. Each profile contains quality photographs, relevant statistics, short biographies, information about what makes these players so successful, and inspirational words from the players themselves. Baseball fans who want to learn about these particular players, and about baseball stars in general, will find it a good, if overpriced, reference book. However, on the back cover, fifteen players are mentioned, but only seven of them are featured in this book. Unsuspecting purchasers may think that all fifteen are described inside. Secondly, the statistics and information are current as of the 2011 season. Thus, we have several quotes from Mark McGwire, a comparison of one of the players to Ryan Braun, and a mention of Roger Clements—all three of whom are now recognized as drug-tainted and not really suitable to be held up as role models or star baseball players. While some might agree with the book's announcement that the Texas Rangers are one of the giants of the major leagues, most readers will expect more from the write-up on Josh Hamilton. Although the book mentions his prior drug and alcohol problems, this would have been the time to have the player forcefully speak out against the steroid era in baseball. Finally, because some of the photographs are spread across two pages, details are often lost in the book's gutter.
