Excellent organization, beautiful photos, clear instructions, and concise presentation all are qualities that make this series a wonderful addition to any library. PRO Nail Care goes well beyond the typical manicure or pedicure. An intriguing history of nail care is provided (who knew they had manicures in ancient Babylon?), as well as a history of nail polish fashion. The anatomy of the hand and foot are examined in detail. Nail diseases and problems are explained with suggested remedies. There are sections on massage, overlay systems, the chemistry of nail products, and a gallery of nail "looks." Most interesting is the section on nail art. The looks are explained with step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear photographs. The comprehensiveness and presentation of the books in this series set them apart from other attractive books on cosmetic techniques. The information is presented in a way that allows even the novice to recreate the looks. Both books contain a list of suppliers at the end; however, only Web sites are listed. Each title also offers a short section offering advice from a professional on developing a career in the field. The books have a covered spiral binding, so they will stay open easily if someone needs to refer to them while trying out some of the techniques. Both would be valuable additions to any library's career section. This series is recommended for public library collections, and would be appropriate for adults as well as teens interested in the beauty business. Reviewer: Victoria Vogel

Preface

Introduction

As well as using our hands for all sorts of practical tasks, we also use them as a way of expressing ourselves and emphasizing what we're saying. They're one of the first things people notice, which is why we need to make the most of them. Beautifully manicured and maintained nails are much-prized attributes that speak volumes about your health and grooming, not to mention your attention to detail.

Neglected hands certainly create a poor impression: bitten nails or torn cuticles indicate a lack of confidence, while perfectly manicured hands suggest somebody who pays attention to detail and takes pride in their appearance.

Everyone can have great looking hands with basic care, meticulous grooming, and regular visits to a professional manicurist. Here they will be buffed, trimmed, softened, painted and filed, massaged and lathered, sloughed, primped, and preened over. Never before has such a variety of artificial nail products been available to extend, repair, or even just strengthen the nail plate, nor has there every been such a selection of possibilities for adornment, from creative coloring, transfers, and stencils to rhinestones and gems.

Manicurists and pedicurists are now focused on a lot more than just the natural nail. These days they need to be fully versed nail technicians, conversant in advanced nail technologies and methods, creativity and artistry, business management, and so much more. One of the fastest growing segments in the beauty business, the nail industry is constantly evolving with new technologies, techniques, and products continually being introduced, providing the nail technician with so much more to ensure the luxury of beautiful nails.

Once you know how to take care of your nails, it will be easy to maintain healthy nails. Beautiful healthy nails require a little TLC — not as complicated as you might think. Nails are usually their healthiest in their natural state, requiring a bit of nail polish for protection and regular applications of hand cream as a moisturizer. Allow time for a home manicure every 7 to 14 days with weekly time for touch-ups. Regular home manicures will protect your nails and help improve your image. Good grooming is essential to keeping and maintaining your hands and feet in prime condition.

    FINALLY!

Finally! A book for the masses. Those of you who get your nails done, THIS IS A MUST READ! If you are tired of being pushed through an assembly line at your favorite salon...this book is for you. If you have wondered whether what they are doing to your nails is the right thing to do, this book is for you. I have been a Nail Technician for 30+ years, an Instructor for 12 years, and have owned my own shop for 10 years and this book is almost IDENTICAL to what I used to teach my classes. Even if you don't want to do your own nails, at least arm yourself with the knowledge of how to do it properly. In my 30+ years I have NEVER used a drill on ANYONE'S NATURAL nails. My drill is ONLY used to shape the free-edge of the ARTIFICIAL nail, THAT'S IT! You will be doing yourself a favor buying this book, if not for you...give it as a gift to someone who does get their nails done. BELIEVE-IT-OR-NOT you could be SAVING THEIR LIFE! This is also an informative book giving the history of nail care and it could be used as a reference to changing your nail care regimen (do I go square, oval, or in-between like squoval?). Either way, this is a MUST HAVE for any complete library. "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!"
