Overview

Pro Oracle Database 11g Administration is a book focused on results. Author Darl Kuhn draws from a well of experience over a decade deep to lay out real-world techniques that lead to success as an Oracle Database administrator. He gives clear explanations on how to perform critical tasks. He weaves in theory where necessary without bogging you down in unneeded detail. He is not afraid to take a stand on how things should be done. He won’t leave you adrift in a sea of choices, showing you three ways to do something and then walking away.

Database administration isn’t about passing a certified exam, or about pointing-and-clicking your way through a crisis. Database administration is about applying the right solution at the right time, about avoiding risk, about making robust choices that get you home each night in time for dinner with your family. If you have “buck stops here” responsibility for an Oracle database, then Pro Oracle Database 11g Administration is the book you need to help elevate yourself to the level of Professional Oracle Database Administrator.

  • Condenses and organizes the core job of a database administrator into one volume.
  • Takes a results-oriented approach to getting things done.
  • Lays a foundation upon which to build a senior level of expertise

What you’ll learn

  • Do battle with “large”—large databases and large objects
  • Move and distribute data using Data Pump, materialized views, external tables
  • Automate critical jobs and tackle database troubleshooting problems

On the back cover of this book it says "Pro Oracle Database 11g Administration is a task-oriented guide to managing complex database environments using Oracle Database11g". The thing I like most about this book is that it lives up to this promise. The book covers all aspects of Oracle Database 11g Administration. It starts with installation and implementation, goes through database management, understanding and managing users/security, architecture, etc. It has several great chapters on RMAN. I cannot think of any area that is not covered. I really like the "task-oriented" approach. For every topic, the author provides step-by-step instructions, complete with scripts for accomplishing each task. Something very nice is that he discusses alternatives for accomplishing tasks, the pros and cons of alternatives and then says how he likes to do it and why. For me, this approach provides a real-world practicality. If there is one thing I would have liked, that is not present, it would be a separate section devoted to 11g features. Although the author discusses what is specific to 11g, it is scattered throughout the book, within the relevant topic chapter. My style is that I would like a separate section, in addition to this, that summarizes new features. The last chapter of the book talks about troubleshooting and auditing. This is where a dba needs to act quickly and effectively. I think this is where most dba's can do better and where this book can help. The book addresses identifying the most common issues and identifying them quickly. Again, the author provides great step-by-step instructions in the sequence that they should be performed. He gives the exact commands (sql and os) that should be entered, why the command is used and how to view the results. There are also scripts that automate some of this. There is even a very nice script that lets you view the alert log from anywhere on the server. This script, like many of the provided scripts work on any server with no alterations (using functions, etc.). The author again tells you his personal methodology and approach to troubleshooting, which I think really adds a lot of substance to the material. Overall, I think this is a great book. By providing step-by-step approaches, the scripts, and the author's own methodology for addressing these tasks, I think this will be a valuable and unique addition to any library.
