Library Journal - Library Journal
This sturdy, eight-volume encyclopedia set presents biographical information, career statistics, and the special achievements of people who have been inducted into the baseball, basketball, football, and hockey halls of fame from 1936 until today. In addition to histories of each each chronologically arranged volume sports an index, which cross-references inductees according to position, league, and team, as well as a glossary. Other noteworthy inclusions are sidebars and photos. Although the work is comprehensive, it is clearly geared toward children and YAs and is not a necessary purchase for adult collections.-Larry Little, Penticton P.L., British Columbia

Gr 6 UpThis attractive set provides biographical sketches of the individuals who have been inducted into the baseball, basketball, football, and hockey professional halls of fame, as well as introductions to those institutions. Each sport is covered in two volumes that are arranged chronologically, from the hall of fame's inception through the 1996 inductees. A few of the most accomplished inductees are featured in two-page spreads that include black-and-white and full-color photographs. The rest of the athletes have text entries only, ranging in length from a paragraph to a page. The sketches are accurate, though undocumented, providing a listing of career statistics and vital information, position or title, and teams. While the information is brief, coverage is complete. Appended are three indexes arranged by name, position, and team. There is no comprehensive index for the whole set or indexes that combine both books devoted to an individual sport. Users must know which sport an individual participated in, have an idea when the person was inducted, or search each volume's index separately. Librarians may want to consider circulating these books as they might be better utilized by sports-minded browsers than those needing substantial details for reports.Tom S.
