Meet the Author

Michael Coles has more than a decade's experience designing and administering SQL Server databases. A prolific writer of articles on all aspects of SQL Server, particularly on the expert use of T-SQL, he holds MCDBA and MCP certifications. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in information technology from American Intercontinental University in Georgia. A member of the United States Army Reserve, he was activated for two years following 9/11.

Scott Shaw is a Solutions Engineer at Hortonworks. He has over fifteen years of experience in data management, working as an Oracle and SQL Server DBA and as a consultant on Microsoft business intelligence projects utilizing both Tabular and OLAP models. Shaw is a corporate trainer, university teacher, and speaker on distributed computing, big data concepts, business intelligence, Pig, Hive, and SQL Server. Shaw is the author of two previous Apress books, Beginning T-SQL and Pro T-SQL Programming. Shaw took his bachelor's at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, his masters' at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his MS in Management Information Systems at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. He is an MCSA and MCT.


Jay Natarajan has more than 15 years of experience in the SQL Server space. Her skills range in both the design and the implementation arenas, having architected and deployed complex solutions for enterprise customers. She joined Microsoft Consulting Services in 2008. She holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Madras. Jay currently lives in Atlanta with her husband, Chad, and their son Satya.
