Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Wild about pro wrestling and looking for a small taste of some of the action, then this book is the perfect choice. Written in the fashion of a mini-biographical information booklet, this addition to "The Best of the Best" series, will give pro wrestling fans some facts about some of the most popular wrestlers today, such as The Rock and Big Show. Readers will get a brief description about several wrestling moves, such as "The Walls of Jericho" and the "Attitude Adjustment." Though written at an early reading level, this book is geared toward middle readers, which makes it an ideal book for engaging struggling readers. Definitions are given for more difficult words or words common to wrestling, which are beneficial for increasing one's vocabulary within the context of the text. The glossary at the back of the book provides the pronunciation for these words and again lists the definition. Further reading suggestions and an index are also included at the end. The accompanying pictures reinforce the colorful descriptions of the wrestlers. Overall, this book provides some brief but interesting facts about pro wrestling in an easy to read format that will most likely appeal to preteen boys. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson

Gr 2–4—Twelve popular stars or groups are given a cursory treatment in each book of this set. Even though only a few sentences are devoted to each one, the series is unique because of activities it covers. Vocabulary is simply defined in sidebars and glossaries. In addition, fans of the featured sports or hip-hop will appreciate that words or phrases specific to the topic (e.g., "tag team," "freestyle," "rookie," "vert") are defined. The fonts are appropriately large for the age group and texts are set in boxes. While Hip-Hop does not seem to fit within this action sports set, it is nonetheless worthy. These books will be interesting enough for ESL readers. Update an existing collection or fill in gaps with specific titles.
