Overview

ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX is Microsoft's Ajax tool for ASP.NET developers and this book covers the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX final release. You’ll learn how to use the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX features in order to create richer, more responsive dynamic Web sites. The book walks you through examples for each featured element, demonstrating how the client and server interact to produce a better Web application, and reviews such topics as client framework, script manager control, networking stack, application services, partial page updates, control extenders, client form elements, and client behaviors.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
If you're a web developer who uses Microsoft technologies, and you want to build rich AJAX Internet applications, what you've been waiting for is here: ASP.NET AJAX. ASP.NET and Visual Studio developers will love how it builds on what they already know, and how quickly they can get seriously productive -- especially if they read Professional ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX.

Lead author Matt Gibbs also led ASP.NET AJAX's development at Microsoft. He knows the technology inside out. (Which you already realize if you've read his MSDN Magazine previews, heard his developer podcasts, or attended his hugely successful MIX07 presentation in Vegas.) Along with ASP.NET MVP Dan Wahlin, he's now written the definitive guide to the official (not beta!) ASP.NET AJAX release.

Gibbs and Wahlin systematically illuminate both client and server features, showing how to use them to "push the limits" of web development. You'll start by learning how to update just portions of a page (avoiding those awful postbacks). The authors offer a quick primer/refresher on JavaScript for ASP.NET developers who've been spending more time with VB.NET or C# lately. Next they turn to the ASP.NET AJAX Library type system, which brings familiar object-oriented techniques to JavaScript: a relief for developers who've become comfy with namespaces and other modern conveniences.

You'll find detailed guidance on ASP.NET AJAX's networking facilities, including how to access ASP.NET services such as authentication and profile storage. The authors introduce controls that let you enrich your user interfaces with surprisingly little new JavaScript coding. There's coverage of testing and debugging (even, surprisingly, Firefox debugging). There's a full chapter on deployment, too, including useful tips on web farm deployment. For rich web application development with Microsoft technologies, this book can't be beat. Bill Camarda, from the July 2007 Read Only

    Dan Wahlin

This book is great! There is another book with content by Dan.

The book is called Jit 'n' Run The Best of Simple Talk - .NET this is one of the best books I have read! It has a lot of very good articles from magazines on the latest technologies and the best techniques I have seen! A couple of my favorite articles are Enhance your Website with ASP.NET AJAX and Using WebServices with ASP.NET. I would definitely recommend the book to my fellow .NET developers.
The article Enhance your Website with ASP.NET AJAX by Dan Wahlin was my favorite. I want to start using ajax for my web pages. The article was written clrearly for people like me that don't know AJAX step by step. If Dan becomes famous from writing and recording music I hope he still writes technical articles.
