Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Joyce B. Vazzano, BS, MS(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)Description: This 7th edition text provides healthcare professionals with up-to-date and reliable disease management information for clinical practice. It is organized by body systems with a brief review of physiology and pathophysiology, followed by a definition of the particular disorder, description of signs and symptoms, a guide to history taking and treatment suggestions. There are easy to read charts and tables.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide busy healthcare professionals with a quick guide to the most common (and sometimes rare) medical diseases seen in clinical practice in order to most efficiently diagnose and manage patient care. In order to accomplish this, physiology and pathophysiology are briefly reviewed, a definition with a summary of the etiology is discussed, along with expected signs and symptoms, physical exam, treatment and supportive interventions. Graphics direct the provider to emergent situations, specific tests and age-specific differences in pediatrics and geriatrics. These objectives are worthy and are accomplished in this text.
Audience: This book is intended for use by healthcare professionals. In my opinion, it is relevant for MDs, interns, residents, nurse practitioners, RNs and PAs, or for students in any of these fields. The author is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine and is an authority on the subject.
Features: This comprehensive guide is organized into 21 body systems or major diseases. There is a review of pathophysiology and physiology at the beginning of each chapter, followed by relevant disease-related information. Graphic logos direct the provider to patient signs and symptoms that warrant immediate medical attention, as well as emergency interventions. Also included are tips for age-specific differences in pediatric and geriatric patients. There are easy-to-read tables and charts in each chapter. Three appendixes provide information on cultural considerations in patient care, rare diseases, and community resources with web site addresses. Pictures and charts are helpful, but would be more pleasing presented in full color (not just in the pink shades provided).
Assessment: This is a clearly written, comprehensive text intended for the practitioner. It is an excellent and easy to follow reference. Recent references are provided at the end of each chapter. Updated information about the diseases covered in this book, along with the latest data on emerging diseases, justify this edition.
