Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:LouAnn Schraffenberger, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P(Univ of Illinois at Chicago School of Biomed & Health Info Mgmt)
Description:This book and an interactive CD-ROM is a study guide for the American Health Information Management Association's Clinical Coding Specialist (CCS) certification examination. The CCS exam tests coding competency and skills at the mastery level for hospital and physician coding functions.
Purpose:The purpose is to help candidates for the AHIMA clinical coding specialist (CCS) examination prepare for the test. It provides study and test taking strategies as well as practice exercises in the format of multiple choice questions and case studies for coding.
Audience:The audience includes experienced clinical coders, usually employed in hospitals or other health settings, who are preparing to take AHIMA's clinical coding specialist examination. The authors are experienced health information management and clinical coding educators.
Features:The book starts with suggestions for study and test taking strategies. The next section is a coding review with multiple choice questions and coding case studies that mimic the exam format. The second section is a mock examination containing a Part I with two sets of multiple choice questions and a Part II with mock cases to code. Appendixes in the back of the book contain information on pharmacology, laboratory testing, a summary of the latest ICD-9-CM codes, and guidelines for ICD-9-CM coding.
Assessment:I have used this book to teach a CCS exam review preparation workshops. I trust the authors as they are credible, knowledgeable coding educators. The book follows the format of the CCS exam with the four-part multiple choice questions and the case studies in the format used during the actual CCS exam. Given the fact the CCS exam has a new exam blueprint beginning June 2007, the 2008 edition of the book will need to be updated more extensively. I also think the multiple choice questions need to be longer and/or more difficult to reflect the actual examination. I have been told by candidates who have taken the CCS exam that this review was helpful but somewhat misleading as the actual test was much more difficult in terms of the multiple choice questions asked and the length and depth of the case studies to code. However, I still recommend this book to students as a viable review for the CCS exam.
