It is impossible to have good designs without having accurate patternmaking and quality construction skills. Professional Sewing Techniques for Designers is an up-to-date sewing guide that teaches fashion design students the skills they’ll need to execute their original designs in a professional environment. Each chapter covers a particular theme, such as collars, and reflects the order of assembly of any garment. Detailed sketches provide visual support to the techniques covered.

This book is great for those who want to move beyond following a commercial pattern's instructions to the letter. Its intended purpose is for students in fashion design school to learn and understand garment construction, from choosing thread to fabric choices, to seeing their design being produced for RTW.

I have no desire to design clothing, however I have already found this book to be invaluable. My goal is to create my own work wardrobe based on what I like to wear using fabrics that are not readily available in RTW. I use the Lutterloh pattern system, which has no instructions on construction - it expects you to take control of your own sewing This book allows you to take that control. It takes you through the fundamentals of each successive layer of a garment, from its foundation (i.e., do you want facings, how and where stablizing is necessary) to the final touches - decorative hand stitching, bound button holes, etc. Its chapters are arranged in the sequential order of garment construction, making it simple to figure out where and when you would add a certain feature or function.
