Meet the Author

David C. Nelson, professor of mass communication and associate dean of University College at Southwest Texas State University, has served as editor of College Media Review and was associate editor of Newspaper Research Journal. He arrived at SWT in 1988 following a 14-year academic career at Purdue University and has experience as both a science editor and newspaper wire editor. His doctorate, master's and undergraduate degrees are all from Purdue. Nelson, who was editor of the SWT's centennial history, "Up the Hill, Down the Years," teaches reporting and information-gathering courses in the department of mass communication. As associate dean, he works with new freshmen and transfer students. He was founding professor of the Argonne National Laboratory Semester in Science Communication, winner of the Best Teacher Award at Purdue University, and recipient of several Presidential Citations from the College Media Advisers. In addition, Nelson has been Senior Fellow of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and a Poynter Institute for Media Studies Teaching Fellow as well as an honors graduate in newspaper leadership.

James D. Bell is professor of management and director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, in the College of Business at Southwest Texas State University. He has also served the college as associate dean. Previously, he was director/coordinator, Division of Business/Managerial Communication, in the College of Business, University of Texas, Austin. Bell received his B.B.A. and M. Ed. from Kent State University and his Ph.D., at the University of Akron. Bell has consulted for a number of organizations, including Motorola, 3M, McNeil Labs (a Johnson & Johnson Company), the Texas State Treasury, the Texas Department of Commerce, Dell Computers, Fundsxpress.com, the Employees Retirement System of Texas, and Texas Instruments. He has been the recipient of SWT's Alumni Association Teaching Award of Excellence (2000), Freedoms Foundation, Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education (1998-99), and the SWT Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence (1992), among others. His publishing and research interests are in the areas of training and development, where is has authored or coauthored over two dozen journal articles. His industry experience, before joining academia, was spent with Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) and AMTEC Corporation.
