Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
Do you want to be a criminal profiler or a toxicologist? This book explains what profilers and toxicologists do and how they do it. It is a science, psychology, mystery, spy, history, and career-advice book all in one. After defining basic terms, the authors present two sections, one on each career path. Each section contains three "true-life" cases, followed by a "forensic download." The first three cases concern the Unabomber, arson, and computer hacking. The forensic download associated with these cases explains how profilers solved the cases and through interviews with career profilers conveys the work, training, and skills of these professionals. The cases in the second section deal with drug-tampering, the attempted poisoning of the Ukrainian politician Yushchenko, and the poisoning of Bonaparte. This section includes information about poisons and the education and work-life of toxicologists. Supplementary material includes resources for information about these careers, a dictionary, and an index. Formatted as if typed on ruled paper with photos and notes attached by illustrated paperclips and filed in manila folders, the layout is engaging and varied, so much so that the structure of the book can be difficult to discern.
