Overview

Edmond Hall's clarinet had a warm, sinuous and gutsy personality all its own. Living Era has done a splendid job with this casual survey of Hall's best recordings, made for the Vocalion, Columbia, Victor, Commodore and Blue Note labels between June 1937 and July 1944. The album opens with three delightful sides by the Edmond Hall Celeste Quartet, featuring guitarist Charlie Christian, bassist Israel Crosby and Meade "Lux" Lewis muscling around on the tinkling celeste, which may sound to some ears like a child's toy piano. The clarinetist's tenure as a sideman during the late '30s is well represented with classic sides by Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, Henry "Red" Allen and Zutty Singleton. Edmond Hall led several fabulous ensembles for Commodore and Blue Note during 1943 and 1944, including two sessions involving pianist Teddy Wilson. Hall also sat in with Coleman Hawkins and Leonard Feather's All Stars for a blues named after Esquire magazine and its famous jazz poll. Living Era's Profoundly Blue is uncommonly excellent. The combination of reflective blues, small group swing and staunchly traditional fare makes this not only the best imaginable tribute to Edmond Hall but also one of the greatest small group swing compilations available anywhere. This music will suit any occasion calling for positive vibrations and unpretentious jazz.
