Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
One might assume that animals living the farthest below sea level are all aqueous. While most animals described in this book do live in the sea, readers also learn about deep-burrowing aardvark's spending their days 40 feet below sea level in the African desert and about green parakeets living 1000 feet below sea level in a Mexican sinkhole. Information about more likely candidates for a book on the world's deepest animals still provides surprises for readers. The deep-sea angler fish not only dives 5000 feet below sea level but its large mouth also allows it to swallow animals even larger that it is! When the spiny sea cucumber is threatened at 33,400 feet below sea level, it squirts out its innards, flees, and then grows new organs. Other animals described are the vampire squid, sperm whale, fangtooth, and sea star. The bilingual text is followed by more "extreme fun facts" and a glossary in both English and Spanish. Illustrations offer readers a glimpse at the unusual creatures described and show their depth-diving abilities in relation to one another on a slide along the side of each page. This book is a member of the "Los extremos y los animales/Animal Extremes" series. Reviewer: Ramirose I. Attebury
