The latest in the Jack Carpenter series from James Swain really isn't a Jack Carpenter novel. Oh yes, Jack Carpenter is there, but this book focuses on another character from the Carpenter series, FBI agent, Ken Linderman. After reading the first hundred pages or so, I realized that Carpenter had yet to appear. But the story is so engaging, I didn't care and just kept reading. Swain is a master of detail, which is one of the reasons I enjoy his work. His extensive research really shines in "The Program", exposing the reader to not just technical detail of criminals and their activities, but the emotional side of both the good and bad guys. "The Program" explores serial killers, mind control and how police work can alter even the strongest of the force. I read this book in three days and found it near impossible to put down. The end is very satisfying, but leaves the door open for the next installment. I can hardly wait!

Swain has written a superb sequel to The Night Monster, which I read in one sitting. In that book, the readers were left hanging at the very end when an FBI agent was unable to find his missing daughter, whom he was looking for throughout the book. The Program solves that case, and then some. There is enough action in this book to fill five books, and the pacing never lets up. Highly recommended.
