Overview

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 begins with a lazy clarinet solo and shimmering strings. Don't be deceived by the calm mood -- this is one of the most exciting concertos in the repertory. Suddenly, after barely a minute, the tempo shifts, and the piano jumps in like an Olympic gymnast taking center stage. Pianist Martha Argerich doesn't shy away from daring musical feats; her musical flips, spins, and turns are awesome and elegant. And she isn't shy about hammering away when the music demands a percussive approach. Her performance will knock your socks off. The Ravel concerto is also a knockout, but its punch is more subtle. The slow, hypnotic adagio will take your breath away as Argerich embroiders the increasingly intricate filagee around the melody. Beautifully remastered as part of Deutsche Grammophon's Originals series, this disc includes Argerich's celebrated account of Ravel's finger-twisting tryptich, "Gaspard de la Nuit."
