Overview

Although you couldn't tell it from the cover -- a black and white photograph of the conductor inexplicably tinted a pale blue-green -- these performances of Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kijé Suite" and excerpts from his "Romeo and Juliet" ballet with Erich Leinsdorf leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra do not date from the antediluvian period. They were, in fact, recorded in 1967 and 1968 during the heyday of two-channel stereo and full-spectrum color. What purpose might be served in making the performances look older than they are is questionable -- surely RCA's rich, full sound would be more appealing to modern listeners than even the best refurbished monaural sound -- but the ultimate effect is to make the performances seem even more distant in time then they actually are. And unfortunately, the performances all by themselves already seem far distant in time. Leinsdorf was one of two more than competent if less than exceptional conductors who had the Boston between the reigns of Münch and Ozawa (the other was William Steinberg). As these recordings demonstrate, Leinsdorf kept the instrument that Muck, Koussevitzky, and Münch made polished if not exactly gleaming. The Boston's playing here is clean but not as crisp, colorful but not as bright, together if not tight. Leinsdorf's interpretations are straightforward and unaffected, but not especially insightful or particularly affecting. For listeners who want to know what the Boston Symphony sounded like between Münch and Ozawa, this disc will be interesting. For listeners looking for great performances of the music, this disc will be disappointing. Testament's sound is a fine replica of RCA's original sound.
