For some, it’s the most highly-anticipated event in all of high school. For others, it’s dreaded like the SATs. For Nova Prescott, it’s a night she’s been planning for months. It’s prom. And all Nova wants is for Brandon to ask her to be his date. It looks as though all her organization will pay off, but then Brandon asks her to “carpool” so they can lower their “carbon imprint” and to make matters worse, an accidental fire causes the prom decorations to go up in smoke! The principal decides that this is the perfect opportunity for the school rebel, Jesse, to put in some community service, and Jesse is forced to take time after school to help Nova repair the damage. At first this seems like torture for both of them, but slowly Nova begins to see that there is something kind and warm beneath Jesse’s motorcycle-riding, brooding exterior. Is it possible that he was falsely accused? Nova’s mother tries to warn her that Jesse isn’t the type to stick around—that he’ll disappear just like Nova’s own father—and Nova doesn’t know who to believe. Should she take the safe route and carpool with Brandon, or should she follow her heart and put her trust in Jesse?

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marla K. Unruh
The countdown is on, and Nova Prescott is marshalling the prom committee to create an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime senior year dance. The budget , the theme, the decorations—all demand the all-out effort of Nova and her team. As she assigns jobs and organizes meetings, her eyes stray to Brandon. Will he ask her to the prom? She struggles to hide her disappointment when he finally suggests they carpool to save energy. Then all the decorations burn in a storage-shed fire, the committee deserts Nova, and she faces the insurmountable task of creating them all over again. It seems to be the last straw when a school troublemaker is assigned to help her, that is, until he turns out to be quietly supportive and talented and good looking. Even though the happy ending is predictable, the growth of the two main characters makes this a better-than-average novelization. Nova makes the journey from needing others for happiness to finding her own strength, and Jesse learns that he does not have to be the loser his father was. Touches of humor help, too, such as when the unassuming Rolo turns up at the prom with the glamorous girlfriend nobody believed he had. One or two slightly improbable events make things turn out right, but isn't that true of many happy endings? Fans of light and readable romance will appreciate this novel. Reviewer: Marla K. Unruh
VOYA - Nicole Jacques
Prom, a novel based on Disney's movie, is the stereotypical story of teenage drama before the big dance. For those looking for a light book, Prom is a simple and clear read with a good balance of multiple story lines. Be warned, however, that the conversion from screen to page has left the story a bit dull—it lacks not only substance but also creativity and figurative language, making it two dimensional. Gr 7–10—This novelization of a Disney movie has everything you'd expect—love lost and found, something horrible turned into a blessing in disguise, and happy endings. Nova, an all-around perfect student and head of the prom committee, is preparing for her school's big night, and with only three weeks left to go, has yet to be asked. She's hoping that super perfect Brandon will sweep her off her feet, but when he asks if they can carpool, she's nothing short of disappointed. Enter said tragedy—the decorations go up in flames, and the committee has nothing left to show for their months of work. When the school rebel with a heart of gold, Jesse, is recruited by the principal to help Nova make all new decorations, she is at first incensed but soon learns that there might be more to this bad boy than leather and a motorcycle. The book also follows the stories of "It" couple Tyler and Jordan, whose storybook romance is anything but, and Justin and Mei, the couple who already have their future together planned—or do they? Other funny side stories include the plight of Lloyd, who's desperately trying to find a date, and best friends Lucas and Corey, who are trying to stay friends as they ultimately are growing up and apart. Although the character development is weak, the interlocking stories are fun and will keep readers interested until the end. A good book for readers with prom fever.—Traci Glass, Eugene Public Library, OR
