Overview

Ellie Wold can't wait to graduate from high school. She and Andrew Bjorklund have been waiting to get married since...well, since forever, and in June they will finally wed. When Andrew announces they have to postpone the wedding, she's disappointed but takes it in stride--there must be a good reason, or Andrew's pa wouldn't ask it of them. But Andrew is angry and can't understand why Ellie isn't upset too, especially when they'd been planning to "marry up" ever since they were in grade school. Disgruntled, he works out his frustration in stubborn determination to finish building their barn and mail-order house, working himself to exhaustion. But just when the new house is nearly finished, an unthinkable tragedy occurs. Throwing aside the vow he made to Ellie, Andrew seeks revenge. As their plans unravel, it looks as if their love may not survive.

"A very well written return to the Red River series, I was easily able to place myself in 1900 North Dakota. The attention to detail and extensive research gave this reader a wonderful sense of time and place. The trials and tribulations of farming and living off the land, the discovering of their faith and living within that faith are aptly portrayed. The cast of characters were well rounded, interesting, and realistic as well. "

If you have a love for historical fiction, get this book! When I finished reading it I was inspired and encouraged to appreciate the little things in life, taking nothing for granted. Life is never easy, but it's worth the glorious journey and we come out of our hard times stronger and wiser, realizing how God was and is with us every step of the way.

Snelling creates some good word-pictures, as in a scene where a mother gives a toddler a piece of candy, then reaps the sticky consequences. The main characters are well developed, and I didn't feel the lack of not having read the original series. (B.J. Sedlock, Historical Novels Review)

Lauraine Snelling is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to all her new books. But I am sorry to say I thought this book was extremely BORING. It literally put me to sleep at night. I am a huge fan of the Red River series and was looking forward to the return series but I honestly don't think I will be buying the next book.

I love the Bjorkland family and I'm glad that we are able to again join with another generation of the family. The original series, Red River of the North, was excellent as was the second series with Thorliff. I love how there is so much detail about prairie life, this time new and old worlds collide as Thorliff's wife is now the doctor of the area. All the familiar faces are still around, making cameos at least. I really liked Ellie. She was practical, reasonable, patient, and understanding. She was able to stand up to Andrew even when he was being completely stubborn. Andrew's temper has been brought up in past books as a forewarning that it would get him into trouble someday. I kind of got annoyed with him sometimes. I know that he loved Ellie and wanted to be with her, but his actions and attitude were very childish. When his father tried to give him reasons about why he should wait a bit for the wedding, which IMO were very reasonable, Andrew throws a tantrum. He gets mad that Ellie wants to go to her own bridal shower. He keeps thinking she's cheating on him. When the climax happens, I know this sounds sadistic, but I'm glad Andrew finally realizes he's gone over the edge and now has to pay the consequences. I never got bored reading this book, I love the historical detail, I love all the background stories from the characters. I can't wait for the next book in the series. At this rate Lauraine will never leave the town of Blessing which is perfectly fine with me!

This book IS NOT BORING! In fact, it has several twists which happen toward the end of it. It is not fast paced; but neither does it drag. The reader must remember that the story is written for the 1900's time period and the people then did not rush as we do today. Two young loves and for reasons they cannot control have to keep postponing their marriage. As in everyday life, this can cause much stress which in turn changes situations. This is a free book. I think almost everyone will find it entertaining and not boring.

It is not often I had the opportunity to read such a good book, I could place my self in the story. I will definitely read more of her books as I can.

In 1900 Blessing, North Dakota, Ellie Wold and Andrew Bjorklund have planned to marry since grade school. They finally announce the date to follow the harvest to everyone¿s elation except perhaps long time nemesis Toby Valders, who tasted Andrew¿s fists over the years. However, happy for his son and pleased that Ellie will soon be his daughter, Andrew¿s dad Haaken asks the couple to delay the date a bit longer. While Andrew is frustrated and upset, Ellie assumes that her future father-in-law has a justifiable reason though he does not share it with anyone. Andrew is angry at his father for making such a request, but also at his beloved Ellie who remains calm making him wonder if she loves him. He takes out his anger on completing the construction of their barn. When fire destroys their new barn and what Andrew stowed inside, he assumes Toby did it. Though he promised his fiancée no fisticuff solutions, a raging Andrew burns his pledge of nonviolence to go after Toby this upsets Ellie who wonders if he will use his fists when they argue. --- Returning to Blessing, scene of the Red River of the North series, Lauraine Snelling provides her readers with a deep historical tale starring a couple who seems destined for a life together since grade school. However, his temper may cost both of them everything as he has major anger control issues. The dispute between Toby and Andrew provides the message that violence is never an answer whether it is based on assumptions leading to presumptive strikes or hard core evidence turn the other cheek enables a victim to calm down long enough to learn rationally the truth. --- Harriet Klausner
