Jessica Lamb-Shapiro grew up in the culture of self-help. Her child psychologist is a parenting author and she herself had dabbled in books, programs, and websites that promised enlightenment and/or relief from stress. At some point, though, she realized that all this immersion really hadn't helped; she didn't feel well-adjusted or self-fulfilled. To rectify the situation, she plunged head-first into self-help strategies, searching for solutions, however extreme, to her restlessness. Thus, her Promise Land serves as a wild cook's tour through the entire world of self improvement exercises, seminars, "healing circles," and pep rally talks. With its stories of uplift silliness Lamb-Shapiro's memoir entertains, but it also wrestles with the core problems that we all have.
