Overview

A New York Times & USA Today Best Seller

"He was my darkness and I was his light. We couldn't exist without each other."

For me, life was simple. I went to school and studied. I spent time with my friends and stayed out of trouble. I didn't drink or swear and I only dated gentlemen. I was the typical good girl with a bright future. My world seemed perfect.

But that was about to change.

Ryder Delaney was the one imperfection in my life. He was the bad boy, the black sheep, the one your mother always warned you about. He had only one hard-and-fast rule - Don't fall in love.

But some rules were meant to be broken.

We were best friends, inseparable since childhood despite our differences. I knew the real man hiding behind the tattoos and bad attitude. He knew all my secrets and dreams. But he didn't know there was one thing I wanted and couldn't have...him.

But sometimes Fate has a way of intervening. Soon our world collapsed. War erupted. Darkness prevailed. Alone and on the run, our only goal was to survive and to ignore the feelings we had for each other. But love is powerful...

and so is the darkness.

Hands down best book I've ever read! I was not expecting the turn of events that happened in the book. For 99 cents, this book far exceeded my expectations. For the length of the story, so much occurred and I love that in a book. I'm really sad that I finished it and I cant wait for the next one!

    AWESOME BUY!

I am giving this one two stars. I realize the world we live in is not perfect and that it can be a down right scary place. When I open a book, I want to spend a little portion of may day not worrying about all the what-ifs in life. These characters spend ALL their time either fighting or trying to survive in this new world. ITS ANNOYING. I have never not finished a book but I came very close to it this time. I couldn't identify with either of the main characters because they were just so completely irritating. I won't be getting book #2.

    Awsome read!!!!!!!

I read some reveiws of this book before I bought it and one stuck with me the most. It said that it reminded the reader of the movie Red Down. I had just seen it and I thought there was no way that I was reading something like that (if you saw the movie I think you would understand why). But I kept going back to the book over and over and I tought why not give it a try. Well I absolutly LOVED it.

Promise Me Darkness is ROMANCE book that takes place in a time that was peaceful but then quickly turned to war. The romance aspect was the reason that I originaly bought the book and then I ended up loving the other parts.

If you are a romance reader I would say that this book is for you.

LOVED this book!! UNTIL I got to the end & it just stopped!!! Now I have to wait for Promise me Light to get the next "chapters". What's up with that???? I hope I don't have to wait long cos this was good. At some parts I wanted them to just get on with it!! There was no way they shouldn't be together. The author made it so easy to picture what Ryder looks like! I love a man with tattoos!!

Phew, woah, what a read! 4.5 Stars out of 5
Well holy mother Apocalypse, this didn’t go quite the direction I was expecting in any shape, way or form. The story centers around Maddie and Ryder, close friends from when they were little. Maddie, super sensible and getting through nursing school is saving her virginity for THE ONE, but the ONE might be the only one who cannot love her back. Ryder!
Ryder, tattooed bad boy, heavy drinking man slut he is has a problem with his anger and making commitments. I was shaking with delicious anticipation already.
The underlying story is there is a terror threat to the US, the news has nothing but the doom and gloom and Ryder is going to enlist. At this point I thought I had it figured out, I didn’t. The catalyst is Maddie’s boyfriend Ben, who wants her to sleep with him, she is not ready.
Then the unthinkable happens and BOOM, all the smoldering tension between Ryder and Maddie explodes, page after page. She’s falling hard for him but he’s the biggest douche on the planet, swinging from utter sweetness to plain old mean.
Then it explodes, the Apocalypse happens. The country is on its head, there is confusion, blackness and ultimate terror. (This was the part of the story that blew me away) The fresh twist on basically romantic story was refreshing.
After that the story took on a new, exciting yet dangerous tone. The journey back to Texas, the tension, the fraughtness of what they lacked and how it was impacting them was so well written it was palpable. Despite the Apocalyptic doom and helplessness Paige managed to keep Maddie and Ryder’s story full throttle. At no point did either story over take the other. I loved it, well done. This is from a self published author but don’t let that put you off, it’s the reason I’m telling you this. Great books can be found in self publishing.

Even though the scenario in this contemporary romance novel is a bit scary (for me at least)I stuck with it. Actually, that's a LIE, I could NOT put this book DOWN!! Loved it! All HELL breaks loose...literally. Maddie's friend Eva is annoying to the tenth degree and the group (Ryder, Maddie, and Brody)gets in a bit of trouble because of her but the teamwork is there. You can see that Ryder is into Maddie but is unsure of pursuing things; he's a bit of a jerk at some points. But aren't most alpha males? Ben, Ben, Ben, Maddie's significant other is...well you'll see.

I cannot wait to read "Promise Me Light." I am normally very patient with the waiting process for book series; however, I want this book NOW!! Okay, Okay, I digress...September is not that far away. Promise Me Darkness will surely hand the darkness to you, tenfold. I anxious to see where this story is going and how the relationships between the characters progress. I am also anxious to see when Ryder's mother and bother will figure out Maddie's secret.

    more from this reviewer

Promise Me Darkness is the first book from Paige Weaver. It is t

Promise Me Darkness is the first book from Paige Weaver. It is the first book in her Promise Me Darkness series, with Promise Me Light now available.

My review was written back in May 2013, so forgive the reference to the second book not being available. It is out now. I just think it funny looking back and how I felt after finishing the first book. I'm moving all of my reviews from Goodreads to Amazon.

I finished this book a couple of weeks ago, but put off writing this review because I was seriously pissed when I got to the end and found not only that the book is the first of a series which was NOT identified in the title, but there is a pretty huge cliffhanger...and I DESPISE cliffhangers!!!!!!!! It should be illegal for an author not to include "#1 in XX series" or something in the title like most authors do for a series. It is just common courtesy to your readers to give them the option of reading as the books are published or waiting until you have published the complete series.

So, rant down, review to go...

This story starts off like many of the New Adult books being written right now. You have Maddie, a nursing student who is attending college with one of her childhood best friends as her roommate. You have Ryder, the other childhood best friend who happens to be a hot, tatted up bad boy. Both Maddie and Ryder have feelings for each other but won't admit it, thus begins the drama, angst, and swoon-worthy story that we all love.

However, THIS story gives us so much more than that. What happens when our country is attacked and becomes involved in a war on our own soil...when life as we know it ceases to exist and everything around us is falling apart? How would you survive in a world with no law, no protection, no electricity, no food and water, no sense of control or safety? Well, you better hope you have a Ryder (or female version thereof) who has been taught how to survive by a seemingly paranoid parent and has plenty of experience fighting and being/looking intimidating.

Ryder was everything you could need and want in your man during times as horrible as those happening in this story. He's all bad boy; loves to fight and thankfully is good at it. He reads people and situations well which SHOULD help keep you out of trouble (but you have to listen and follow directions *rolls eyes at Maddie and Eva*). Luckily Ryder DID listen to his dad, even though he must have felt the things his dad taught him were ridiculous at the time. Ryder is a survivor. (view spoiler). Ryder is also as frustrating as they come with his resistance to admit how he feels for Maddie. I seriously wanted to pull him out of my Nook and beat some sense into him! And unlike most of our book bad boys, he doesn't even have a reason to be this way! It's not like he was abused or abandoned by his parents as a child or lost someone close to him so he is afraid to get close to anyone else. Absolutely no reason for him to have commitment issues, in my opinion. But, it does provide the angst we all seem to love (me, not so much).

I have to admit Maddie and her friend/roommate, Eva, got on my nerves. They definitely would have been toast without Ryder. There are times when you have to have some sense of survival. Come on, watch a little TV drama so you know how to react when something horrible happens!! If you never watched, Jericho, the short-lived TV drama that was on CBS for a while, you really should. It would have really helped Maddie and Eva. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER fall for the guy lying in the middle of the road if an IED is set off and the majority of our country loses power. I'm just saying...

On the subject of Maddie, that poor girl had a seriously bad time in this story! I mean, Lord, cut the girl some slack already!! Surely book two will bring Maddie a little light in the darkness, huh? Yeah, probably not if you go by how this one ended.

OK, so you might be assuming that I didn't like this story, but you'd be wrong. I really did...very much! I guess all of the things that frustrated me kept me so tangled up in the story that I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end...and then when it DID end ON A CLIFFHANGER no less, I spent the rest of the night grumpy and complaining (over and over) about no resolution for at least FOUR MONTHS and with no warning from the author. I thought my husband was going to shoot me, but I couldn't help it! So, I give Paige Weaver props for writing a story that drew me in so much that I want to hate her and refuse to read the rest of the series...but I don't and I will read the rest of the series. I will just probably wait until she completes the other books before I read them!

This isn't like any romance story I've read in the last year. The story centers around Childhood best friends Maddie and Ryder. Who have been denying their feelings for one and other. But when the world goes to war, they are suddenly thrust into darkness. And must learn how to survive. I genuinely enjoyed this story, just how unique it was. Also the fact that something like the war that raged in the book could actually happen. Great Work Paige Weaver
