All Music Guide - Bruce Eder
Promised Land came from the last recording sessions that Elvis Presley ever had in Memphis, the city where his fame and his legend started. The December 1973 Stax Records studio sessions showed him, as he had on From Elvis in Memphis, reaching out to publishers other than those he owed for songs, and the repertory embraces material by Chuck Berry, Waylon Jennings, and Larry Gatlin, among others. With the best players on hand and an upbeat mood when these songs were cut, and the singer himself lean and rested after a couple of years of concertizing, the vibes throughout this album were positive and then some. Elvis sounds bold and confident in ways that make this album a diverting, if not profoundly exciting experience. It's not as distinctive or as involved a personal document as Elvis Country or the concentrated soul workout of From Elvis in Memphis, but it does feature some fine passionate singing throughout most notably on "It's Midnight," a wrenching performance. The eight bonus tracks on the spring 2000 remastering in excellent sound are drawn from the same sessions but originally appeared on the album Good Times.

Elvis Presley Fans Will Enjoy this Release, but wonder why the label didn't go the extra step.

This album contains the ten cuts on the RCA Victor album "Promised Land" and eight songs from the RCA Victor album "Good Times". This leads the listener to ask why the label didn't just go the extra distance and add the two songs missing from the Good Times album.
Having said this, it was still a good listening experience to hear this collection. I became a fan of Elvis from that night in December 1968 when the Singer special (now known as the comeback special) aired. Throughout the remainder of the 1960's and 1970's, I bought every new release including the bottom-feeding Camden label albums that mixed one or two new songs with a batch of retreads from previous works.
"Promised Land", the single, is Elvis in his element. Good fast-paced rock and roll. His covers of Waylon Jennings "You Asked Me To", Jerry Reed' "Talk About the Good Times", and Conway Twitty's "There's a Honky-Tonk Angel" are distinguished by his passion for country. My personal favorites are "Mr. Songman" and "Love Song of the Year". Why "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" and "Take Good Care of Her"were not included in this release remains unexplained, but this is a good effort at any rate.
