When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancé, would make a wonderful husband except that she's been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.
A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan's life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life she so adamantly tried to escape.
Promises is the first book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends through the perils of growing up in a discrete world that inherently threatens human society.

I received a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
This is the classic tale of star-crossed lovers, and a love triangle, with a twist. The lovers are Eviana, a mermaid, and Brendan, a selkie. (A selkie wears a seal skin.) They are not permitted to mate. Eviana is pledged to Kain, leader of a rival clan, in an arranged marriage. It is to take place on her 18th birthday, which is within one week. She really doesn't want to marry Kain, and tries to run away with Brendan. Soon, however, events occur which force her to make choices she doesn't want to make, and unleash power she doesn't know she has. Any more would spoil the book. Since this was already planned as book 1 of a trilogy, it ends with a cliffhanger. The copy I had included the first chapter of book 2, which gives an indication of where the book is going. (I haven't read books 2 or 3 yet.) All in all, good storytelling. It's always interesting to see how authors explain mermaids living as part of our world, like Ariel. It definitely adds new life to the genre, with the interesting lovers' twist. I look forward to reading books 2 and 3 someday, to see how the story finishes. All in all, a good book.

Have you ever started a book and knew by the second page that you don’t
want to put it down? That is what happened when I read Promises by Amber
Garr. This story is about the mermaid Evianna and how she has to deal
with the consequences of the decisions she has made. She is in love with
her best friend Brendan who is a selkie but she is promised to the
merman Kain. She makes a choice, disobeys her family and her life is
never the same. I was really impressed with Evianna and how she never
made excuses for what she did and live with what happened. So if you
are a fan of YA Paranormal adventure/romance books then this is a must
read for you. I promise you that you will stay up until the early
morning hours just to finish it!

I picked this book to review because I heard a lot of good things about
it and also the name of the series made me smile. Syrenka is a polish
word for mermaids! I see that almost everyone loves mermaid books.
This is the second book of that type I read and so far… YES! YES! YES!
I loved the world Amber created. It’s full of magical creatures and
amazing characters. Some are crazy, some are caring and some are simply
stupid. I hated the main heroine, Eviana. I understood her feelings but
she acted too much like me and… I know it’s stupid. She left the clan
because they forced her to marry someone she didn’t love and ran away
with a selkie. I’M NEVER GOING TO UNDERSTAND SELKIES. She is so blinded
in love that she can’t realize that her lover is an idiot. I knew from
the beginning how it’s going to end. I’m team Kain for sure, but he
is even too perfect. Handsome, caring, strong… It doesn’t matter, I love
him. Basically, this book is about a mermaid who left her clan and
amazing boy who’s in love in her for a weird selkie. In between, there
is a war. It’s simple, sounds stupid but it’s amazing. I don’t even know
why I liked it, but I did.

Wow! Promises simply left me open-mouthed! This book is seriously one of the best I've ever read. Since I was little, I was always of fan of mermaids. The ocean fascinates me, with all its mysteries and wonders, so much so that I always spent my time watching The Little Mermaid. I thought it was the best movie ever. But, don't get me wrong. I never once imagined that fish and lobsters and seagulls were singing while in the water. I wasn't that gullible.
So, it's no surprise for me that Promises was such a good book! I haven't read a mermaid book in awhile, but I liked Mrs. Garr's version of mermaids. Mermaids who can control humans? That sounds pretty cool! When I imagined mermaids, I thought of girls who longed to be human. But these merfolk were quite different. They had wealth, influence, and control over humans! Frankly, I loved these merfolk(although since I'm a human, I shouldn't be too happy).
The main character was Eviana. Let me just mention something quickly. I love the name Eviana! It's not one I've ever heard, but the name certainly befits a mermaid. It's very unique. Now, let's move onto the character herself. I thought Eviana acted a tad childish for her age(17-18). But then again, she does live the life of a spoiled heiress. But, boy is she in for a surprise when her world comes crumbling down. I won't say anymore, lest I ruin the book.
Speaking of boys, there were two very yummy guys in this book. Kain and Brendan. Apparently, most of the mermen are hotties, and I'm completely alright with it. Although my heart strayed sometimes towards Kain, the sexy heir, I just couldn't get enough of Brendan, the selkie. Sort of a forbidden love. He was just too cute and mature. I thought he was good for Eviana. Plus, I always think an older guy is hotter, and he was already 21(Kain was around 18/19)!
All I can say about Promises is that you need to get your hands on it! It was an amazing book with a beautiful cover(for all of you out there who judge a book by its cover). And who doesn't love mermaids?
