Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck
When Luke Firth, class president, announces that he will be moving away, everyone is curious as to who will be the new president. It is a given that Rose Thornton will run. Tired of Rose controlling everyone, David Mortimore Baxter decides to run against her. The race is on! In order to win the election, David begins to make promises that he will not be able to keep, such as promising one boy a date with David's sister. He also spreads rumors about Rose; for example, that she will make everyone wear pink. The race gets more and more heated, with Rose and David's parents even getting into the act. Worst of all, Rose sees David forced to model his sister's clothes. After an intense debate, David must make a decision that could affect the lives of everyone in the class. This amusing story is an excellent and humorous depiction of class elections. A glossary, discussion questions, and writing prompts are also included. Garvey's illustrations accent the text, which changes fonts at times. This adds a diary feel to this book that fits perfectly with David's voice.
