Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"As Jane has offered us a glimpse into some of the yearnings of her heart, she has again opened the scriptures for us, and has shown us in her unique way how we also can be nourished by God's Word.
"This is very touching and resourceful little book. It is a devotional that draws us back again and again to glean more treasures that await those who trust in God's promises of help during difficult and stressful times."
--Loris Webb

"Promises of Hope in Difficult Times is a wonderful book of encouragement and one that I will reread often. Jane shares her life in such a way that I am encouraged in my own. Struggling through my own mother's Alzheimer's journey, I can find patience and comfort in Jane's words. My daily walk through life's unexpected land mines is easier as Jane reminds me of God's presence, care and love."
--Marea Stone

"Every now and then someone with talent and wisdom writes a book that is so necessary, so timely we realize this was the book we'd been waiting for, though we didn't know it. With grace, humility, and a transparency Kirkpatrick invites us to walk with her through her draws and valleys. An old Jewish proverb says: The only prerequisite for prayer is a broken heart. This book is a prayer for the broken hearted and a promise of hope."
--Gina Ochsner

"This devotional could not have come at a better time. Stricken with some new physical challenges and having a husband in constant back pain, I could relate to Jane's stories and emotions. Jane's devotional reminds us that we are okay in God's eyes and of His never ending love for us. I can't wait to share this book with others."
--Jeanie Mhyre

Reviewed by Lela Buchanan for Readers' Favorite

We all need hope; hope provides buoyancy when the struggles and challenges of daily life work to keep you mired in the mud. "Promises of Hope for Difficult Times" by Jane Kirkpatrick is only a small book but it offers a wellspring of that critical life ingredient--hope! With short vignettes, Kirkpatrick opens the door to her inner sanctuary, sharing the emotional and spiritual adaptations she must make as those she loves most begin to age and develop various infirmities. Nor does she shy away from the biggest losses we each face on our life's journey--that of the passing of beloved family members. How many of us carry around a suitcase packed with worry or guilt, longing to feel light and free, but never quite able to unpack it or discard it? "Sometimes in my effort to get all my ducks in a row, I instead add new ducks that don't need to be there," Kirkpatrick writes referring to her own needless worries in a specific health situation.

Every page will inspire you or challenge you to look at your own imperfect life and persevere. The author's observations about life are insightful, such as giving value indiscriminately to others, or learning not to judge a life by its productivity but "just because they exist." She speaks of "word wounds" and the time and energy needed to heal those kinds of wounds. Kirkpatrick believes in giving hope and she does it with grace and dignity. "Giving is the yeast of life," she writes, "it always rises more than expected and gives us more than imagined." You will receive the precious gift of hope as you read this beautiful devotional.
