Editorial Reviews

Booklist - Lillian Lewis
"Mallette's third novel is a welcome addition....Mallette has written a fine drama about families and the sacrifices and struggles they endure for one another."
Amazon.com - Priscilla Johnson
Mallette has written a very moving book. At times, you want to scream, yell, cheer and cry (usually all at the same time) They are dealing with the same everyday issues that everyone faces, relationships in marriage and family, father/son, mother/son, and a list of others. Hats off for such great story telling. Trust me I have learned my lesson....don't read the cover, Just buy the book.
Publishers Weekly
"Mallette's great strength is her willingness to reveal the weaknesses and occasional petty vindictiveness of all her protagonists, which enables her to craft a credible portrait of a family in distress. A brief, belated happy ending has a tacked-on feel, but overall, Mallette delivers a powerful tale exploring issues of social justice and family solidarity."
Amazon.com - Ronald Vince
Rarely has a book kept me this interested. I kept looking for clues to see who the real killer was and also to see if Meika would eventually go to her grandparents or her crack addicted mother. After I finished this book I just went to the bookstore and didn't have any particular title in mind, I just wanted another book by Ms. Mallette because she has hooked me on her writing.
Amazon.com - SR Williams
Whew...I have to be honest and say that this book made me want to wake up in the middle of the night and start turning pages. I definetly suggest this book to everyone. Gloria Mallette did an excellent job with this book. I felt like I was right there trying to solve the mystery for the family and I could feel the pain when Mekia was taken away. ...GET THIS BOOK NOW!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

    Unimaginable Grief

Promises to Keep is the story of a family placed under great emotional strain after the tragic and senseless murder of a family member. No parent wants their child to precede them in death, but such is the case with Nola and Ron Kirkwood. Their son Troy walked out the door with his young daughter for an outing, never to return. Knowing their son so well, they knew that something must be wrong only to have their worst fears come true with the news of his murder. Grandparents now have to take on the role of parent to their now orphaned grandchild. As if dealing with their son's murder and knowing his murderer is roaming the streets freely isn't enough, the unstable and drug-addicted mother of their grandchild demands custody. Promises to Keep was just okay. It was a little slow, yet touching at times as you felt the characters' grief. I've heard good things about this author, so I'll give her another try.

    Wonderful

This book was excellent. I couldn't believe the ex-girlfriend had something to do with his murder but the book was amazing and everyone should read it.

    Family Drama

A suspenseful and heart-wrenching novel, Promises To Keep, takes you into the lives of the Kirkwood family. An ordinary day turns tragic as Troy, a single father, comes up missing, leaving Meika, his 5 year old daughter, alone at the movies. It is later determined that Troy had been murdered, but there are no clues left behind to aid in finding the killer. Nola and Ron, Troy's parents, ban together along with Troy's brother, Vann, to investigate the murder. Vann returns home only to become obsessed with the case, leaving his girlfriend and her children feeling abandoned. Relationships are put to the test during this stressful time and all are forced to deal with their own separate demons. As the Kirkwoods attempt to return to a normal life another bomb shell is dropped into their lap. Meika's drug addicted mother, Cordelia, comes back into the picture demanding custody of her daughter. Once again, the family must face disappointment and pain. Gloria Mallette pens a very descriptive novel. Although it is a little drawn out in the middle, and the end leaves you with some unanswered questions, most of the book is page-turning drama. A Everyday Tragedy

This is one book I will never forget. It gives nothing but real true situations, heartache, and the strength these characters used throughout the entire story. Gloria Mallette will go very far with stories like these.

Took to long to get to the point

This was a great book and i liked it a whole lot but it took to long to get to the point. It went off of the topic a bunch it seemed like to me that it was not staying on the subject of finding who killed Troy. It just had a bunch of difrrent things that was going on then since it tld you about the other stuff it did not tell what happened. To them like the little girls mom ok she got locked up but how did the girl act once she got back with the grandparents.
