Short tales about deadly books, by top mystery authors
In frigid Wyoming lies a mystery that stretches back to Nazi Germany
Lyle and Juan wait outside the lawyer’s house in ski masks, pistols hidden behind their backs. Shortly after dawn, Paul Parker, an aged lawyer, and his old dog step into the cold. The thugs kill the dog, and take the lawyer hostage. Parker’s day has started badly and is going to get much worse. Once a fine lawyer, Parker’s enthusiasm has slipped with age, and criminals like Lyle are part of the reason for his disillusionment. Years after they last saw each other in court, Lyle is convinced that Parker owes him something. At gunpoint, Lyle and Juan make Parker lead them to the old Angler ranch, to open up a hidden library whose volumes hold the secret to forgotten riches, and the strangest war profiteering scheme to ever come out of the Great Plains.

Meet the Author

C. J. Box is the award-winning creator of the Joe Pickett series. Born in Wyoming, he worked as a reporter, surveyor, ranch hand, and fishing guide before he began writing fiction. In Open Season (2001), Box introduced Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game warden and expert outdoorsman who fights corruption on the plains. The novel was a success, winning the Gumshoe Award and spawning an ongoing series that has now stretched to twelve novels, including Force of Nature (2012) and the Edgar Award–winning Blue Heaven (2009). Box co-owns a tourism marketing firm with his wife, Laurie, and in 2008 won the BIG WYO award for his efforts to bring visitors to his home state. Box is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. A lover of the outdoors, he has traveled across the American West on foot, horse, and skis. He lives in Wyoming with his family.

This short novella is based on a picture showing American pronghorns being delivered to Hitler's Germany in 1936.  Box has taken this picture and created a creative fictional story around this true premiss. The actual picture is included with the story.

Two men have kidnapped a lawyer during a blizzard.  This lawyer defended against one of these men's grandfather's assertion that he was swindled out of money he should have gotten from his old partner because they both owned the airplane that captured and delivered the pronghorn.

The interplay of the growing storm, good and evil, and an attitude of 'deserving something' because of past events is made into a fast passed story in the deft hands of C J Box.  Short, but definitely worth the read!!

Is this some kind of a Joke?

I got a teaser on my “NOOK” for a bargain book and loaded the sample of 27 pages. It seemed to be a really good read, so I bought it
along with a few others. I never could get more than the 27 page sample loaded, so I took it to the customer service desk of my B&N store.
They tried but could not get the book to load on my reader. Finally they gave in and called a special number that stores have to pass
complaints on to the great B&N HQ. The local store could not get them to help. They want to give me my money back but I want the book
    that B&N hooked me on.
