This book is an important description of propaganda. It allows the reader to realize that there is more propaganda out there then the reader might realize. The only caveat is that the writing is dense and old fashioned.

An essential work detailing how and why propaganda, the most successful technology of the 20th century, manifests and controls us, usually with our complicit consent. Surprises lurk in this scholarly work, such as the idea that propaganda is a product that people want and need to pacify emotions set a-jangle by the pressures of the modern world. Ellul points out that the usual conception of propaganda is that it is something that is foisted on populations. He explodes this myth with numerous historical examples, many of which, admittedly, pertain to his 1960's French setting. That minor shortcoming was not enough to detract from his book's power, however. I learned how 'civilization' works from reading *Propaganda*.
